Restrict certain items from shipping zones

It would be nice if there as an option to restrict certain SKUs or items from shipping to different countries. For example, if we're restricted from selling a certain item to the United States (We're a Canadian company) but allowed to sell other items no problem, how do I do this in my cart?

I wish there was an option for this available under each product tab

That would be a complicated system currently, and one that would require a lot of work, but an easier method might be to have a category for US products and Canadian products. It's not the norm, so not really built into it...
