Question about Setting up Backorder Products

Is it possible to set up in stock dates on products so if I run out the store page displays a message letting people know there might be a delay? I'd like people to still have the option to purchase them but display a clear bold message like, "Backordered - Expected Ship Date 9/15/2015"

It would be great if I could manage my inventory in the back end admin and enter dates of when my new shipments will arrive then let the front end manage itself if I sell out.

well, we do have the option to edit a product, and under advanced listing options you can select 'Allow Backorder' and then enter an expected delivery date. This essentially turns on the backorder system though and they can still add to cart and pay for the items, but shows a date to the customer so they are aware. You can see if that does exactly what you are looking for.
