bread crumbs showing twice or none

I found the configuration of the breadcrumbs to turn on or off. However, when turning it on it shows up twice in the ../store/?model_number=.. page, once right under the store page name, where it should be, but also above the model number in the product description area (next to the image). There are no changes made to the themes, pages, or anything else, all "out-of-the-box". How can we control this?
