How to use option sets for a mix and match gift box?

We have 74 different designs available for selection. We would like the customer to select 6 to be included in a gift box. Ideally the customer should be able to view all 74 designs, select 6, then enter a quantity for how many of these gift boxes they want. Creating an option set with 74 swatches and then replicating it 6 times is redundant and takes up a lot of room on the page. Can I just display the swatches once, and limit the customer to only 6 selections out of the 74?

I wonder if you could use the specifications area, build out a custom swatch system using tables to show 74 swatches... something that could be reused if you needed, and this way users could view them, and then on the product you have option sets, just 6 combo boxes... with the selection of each of the choices...
