Yes, if you click the 'email' box, then the customer will receive their order confirmation again with the inclusion of the actual shipping carrier and shipping # that you entered telling them that is what the shipping information is for that order. If you leave that unchecked and update the order, then it just does not send the email to the user.
you can change an order email address to your own, and save, thus able to test the process on yourself if need be.
